THE NEED

An estimated 10% of the general population is predisposed to alcohol and/or drug addiction.

When Freedom Ranch was founded in 1972, the population of San Diego County was 1,433,000. Today it’s more than doubled to an estimated 3,100,000. Once 143,000 San Diegans were predisposed to addiction; now there are 310,000.

Yet the number of licensed recovery beds available in the County has gone from 800 in 1972 to 875 partially-funded beds today. There are more than twice as many people who need help, and almost no more capacity in the County than there was nearly 4 decades ago.

No wonder the average waiting period to enter a residential facility is 4–6 weeks.

That’s why we need to double the number of residents we can serve, and we want to accomplish that by our 40th birthday in 2012.

THE EXPANSION

We’re well on our way, but we need your help.

We completed our strategic plan in 2005 and began the process to obtain the required Major Use Permit from the County in 2006. We’ve acquired an additional 200+ acres adjoining our original 20, and completed preliminary plat and architectural drawings for four new dormitories and a combined dining hall and multipurpose meeting room.

We’re ready to begin a community outreach program as soon as we have commitments for funding construction of our new facilities. We believe our neighbors will welcome our expansion because:

●  at least 80% of our new acreage will forever remain pristine and available for all to enjoy;

●  the new buildings will suit our environment and be barely visible from the road; and

●  our excellent reputation is due in part to our ongoing goodwill efforts in the community (read more).

Our new facilities would be built in stages:

Phase 1:  one new dorm and the new dining/meeting room

Phase 2:  another dorm

Phase 3:  the final 2 dormitories

When completed, we’ll have more than 100 licensed beds and a dining/meeting facility that can accommodate even further expansion.

San Diego desperately needs to provide more care and treatment to more men suffering from addiction. The Freedom Ranch, a prominent partner in this effort, wants to lead the way to a more sober future for us all. We’re working to raise funds to complete the project.
